An Absolute Must-Do Activity!

My girlfriend and I signed up for the Chollo coco (red snapper) class; as we wanted to take a class that would be something we wouldn't normally eat/prepare.

Javier (our cooking instructor) was extremely knowledgable, personal, loves what he does, and his excitement for the tradition is infectious.
Anthony (our mixologist) did not speak any English and he was still able to easily convey the concepts, steps, and passion for his craft.
These two gentlemen made the entire experience my favorite night that we spent in Punta Cana.

We started the night off with Javier giving us a history lesson on coffee and chocolate, and their roots in Dominican tradition.

We then went to a stand up station where Anthony walked us through how to make a Mamajuana mojito. The entire time Javier was taking photos so we could concentrate and just have a fun personal experience. I'm not much of a rum drinker but it was the freshest, tastiest, and most refreshing drink I've had. Anthony then reminded us that he did nothing, and we made the drink ourselves. (I have since been searching online to get that brand of mamajuana delivered to our house.

We moved onto a cooking station where all the meat and vegetables that we were using that night were prepared for us (a hidden gem in the experience). Javier then graciously walked us through, step by step, on how to make red snapper in two methods. First we made ceviche, then red snapper fillets cooked in coconut milk. He was so kind, patient, funny, and his excitement was infectious. I was worried that it would feel like a Home Ec class, but it felt like just a couple of friends making dinner together.

Even though we have already been, when we visit Punta Cana again we are adamant that we are doing one of the other two classes they offer. We're very excited to get the chance to hang out with these gentlemen again.
What an incredible experience!

There are so many wonderful things to try and do in Punta Cana this cooking class is ! This was my first trip to Punta Cana, and my boyfriend's first time anywhere out of the US. Above all else, we are huge food lovers - so this was a perfect idea for us! We also love to learn about other cultures and when we arrived, we first got some background information and history about Dominican coffee and chocolate from our wonderful host and chef, Javier - we were blown away by the Americano that Anthony made for us before starting dinner, it was absolutely delicious. Anthony also walked us through how to make a mojito with mamajuana and also taught us about the importance of presentation to a cocktail (some tricks we will definitely be using at our own parties haha).

To start dinner, Javier taught us how to make ceviche, which neither myself or my boyfriend had a lot of knowledge or experience with. The ingredients and flavors for this appetizer were so fresh and light, it was amazing. The came the main course of beautiful red snapper, vegetables and rice (chillo coco). It tasted like something you would get at an upscale seafood restaurant! And it's definitely a recipe that we will be making at home.

This experience was much more than we anticipated in the best way. We cannot thank the staff enough for their teachings- Javier and Anthony were not only professional, but they were so warm and welcoming, we really felt at home...they were also hilarious and so much fun to cook with!! Please take this class if you have the opportunity to, you will be happy that you did :)
What a wonderful suprise!!!! This is a must DO!!!!

I make it a point to take cooking classes on all of our trips now. I love to meet the local families and people and learn their culture and food styles. Going to Chillo Coco did not disappoint. Francesca was fabulous, and went above being our teacher. We loved learning they used different processes for making coffee and how Mama Juana was made. We made Brocheta DePiguillo con coco, Chilo Al Coco, and the wonderful Chocolate rellenos. I was a mouth watering dinner. We will be returning next visit. The staff was excellent. Paying attention to detail for us was off the top! Katherinne Medina who makes the fabulous chocolates, Lois Garces, Eduardo Morillo and Anthony Navarro were right there in the kitchen tending to helping us and making sure we were happy. If you get a chance to try something new, THIS IS THE PLACE. Thank you all so much.

Yo hago que se atienda a clases de cocina en todos nuestros viajes. Me encanta conocer a las familias locales y a la gente y aprender su cultura y estilos de comida. Ir a chillo coco no decepcionó. Muchas gracias.

What can I say Francesca is amazing! Learnt how to cook red snapper chillo coco which was delicious. We had a fantastic time. One of the best excursions we have done. To start off with we learnt about the history of coffee, coco and mamajuana. We the went into the store to look at the local produce and tried a LOT of rum. Next we went and did our cooking class section where we got to see how the rice and red snapper were cooked. We both got to cook our own fish and at the end eat it. Thank you so much. Great food and great company. Cannot recommend this any higher!!
Wonderful Cooking Class

This was so much fun! We cooked red snapper and it tasted amazing. One person in my group doesn't eat fish and he ate all of his. The chef was so nice and personable which made it so much fun.
